Our Top 10 Pet Friendly Plants
Plants and pets make a happy, vibrant home. However, when our pets take interest in sampling the local foliage, it’s best to be sure the plants they can reach are safe. Here are our top 10 Pet Friendly Plants that pet parents can enjoy, worry-free.
1) Boston Fern
Boston Ferns are beautiful AND useful, as they’re excellent at purifying the air in our homes. Enjoy them indoors year-round, or use them as a modern outdoor patio or porch accent in the summer months. There’s a reason it’s our number 1 Pet Friendly Plant!
2) Peperomia ‘Ginny’
Peperomia have a striking foliage with oval shaped, waxy leaves. Peperomia ‘Ginny’ is a popular tricolor houseplant that is easy to grow and care for. The plant is grown for its showy foliage, and it’s ideal for beginner plant parents with pets.
3) Calathea
A bold and beautiful houseplant, Calathea varieties look good even without flowers. Calathea’s fancy, non-toxic foliage makes it one of the pet friendly plants that are perfect for tabletops or hangers. As the plants grow (eventually, they can get up to about 3 feet or so, but they are slow growers) they’re fantastic floor plants or featured on low plant stands.
4) Parlour Palm
The Parlour Palm (Neanthe bella) is the quintessential houseplant – the proof is right in the name! Growing a parlour palm tree indoors is ideal because it grows very slowly, and thrives in low light and cramped space. It’s also an excellent air purifier and can withstand an occasional curious nibble.
5) Spider Plant
Spider Plants are among the easiest pet friendly plants to grow. With dangling, strappy leaves, it’s named for the spider-like plantlets that it produces over time. Use in a variety of spaces, including bright, sunny spots, or in indirect light.
6) Bird’s Nest Fern
Bird’s Nest Fern (Asplenium nidus) is a strikingly architectural fern for indoor or outdoor décor. It features lush green fronds that radiate out from a central point, creating something of a bird’s nest effect (hence its common name). Its long, often slender fronds create fantastic contrast against more common houseplant fern varieties, making it a valuable addition to the home or office.
7) Phalaenopsis Orchid
Phalaenopsis Orchids are beautiful, low-maintenance tropical flowers that will thrive in a bright spot indoors with bright, indirect sunlight. TERRA’s orchid collection is locally grown by CosMic Plants in Beamsville, Ontario!

9) Herbs
Edible herbs are a welcome addition to gardens, containers, countertops and tables, and most are perfectly safe for pets. Cat grass (available in season) can provide a healthy opportunity for cats and dogs to indulge in their natural instinct to eat grass, even when indoors full time.
10) Air Plants
A plant that lives on air? So cool! Air plants are a group of plants called epiphytes, which absorb the water and nutrients they need through scales on their leaves. They have no roots, don’t grow in soil, and can live just about anywhere with bright light!
